It’s cold again, the Hurricanes last game of the season, we roast our own coffee, and Mel gets Lyme Disease…

Let’s hit the Lyme disease part first shall we ;) ?

For starters, SHE’S FINE! Deep breath… ok.

Mel got bit by a tick presumably while walking in Umstead and she found it embedded in her side the next morning. She got it out and we kept an eye on her for the next few days. She felt fine, but got what looked like a common run of the mill rash around the bite, not the tell tale “bullseye” rash that often accompanies Lyme Disease. We kept an eye on the rash and that too seemed to be going away, but yesterday it staged a come back and Mel went to the doctor, got a Lyme Disease diagnosis and an antibiotic prescription. She’ll be fine, the doc said she caught it early and if she takes her pills, she’ll be rid of it completely. So no worries.

It’s somewhat ironic though, since we’ve been down here I think I’ve pulled at least five ticks out of me from our outdoors adventures, including a TON of babies when I apparently kicked a tick ball while hiking. I’ve never had rash or anything! Mel gets bit one time, and gets the Lyme! Now if there was only a Corona to go with it! :)

Then it gets freaking COLD again. I know, I know, by my roots standards (Mel and I were hardcore New England kids before we moved south), its balmy, but to have it be in the 80′s off and on for the last two weeks and then have it plunge down into the 30′s overnight. That’s a bit of a swing…

We have tix to the last ‘Canes game of the season tonight. Unfortunately, it’s been a somewhat mediocre year for our defending Stanley Cup champs but, as cliche’ always goes; there’s always next year. All told, we had some great times with Dad this years and of course there’s always the one memorable game we all went together to, that was just awesome. So, they lost the cup but we gained some great memories! Hopefully next year will give us some more “WHO WHOOOOO!” and less “BOOOOOO”.

And in one last bit of fun news, Mel and I got into roasting our own coffee!! We bought our coffee green, literally and ecologically, from a wonderful site at http://www.sweetmarias.com , definitely check them out. There is so much info on home roasting on the site, that it’ll make your head spin, but the basic point of this is that it’s not that hard and in half hour to 45 minutes you can a half pound of roasted, ground beans as well as have a steaming hot cup of the freshest coffee you ever tasted!!! Really cool! And I owe Mel quite bit for this one as I was pretty damn skeptical.

Add to all of this that the grounds from Sweet Marias are all fair trade and certified organic and you’ve got a peice of mind. But here’s the final layer of icing: they’re cheap! A whole pound of coffee beans from Sweet Marias, is a little less 5 bucks a pound!

So, that brings you up to date on us! The house work is still occurring but we’re making headway! Pics will be coming. I promise. Just have to find the time.

Hope all is well with you!
