Boylan Heights, Door Reclamation and 17 Years…

A lot of folks love Raleigh for precisely the reasons I don’t (the dating scene, night life, the “primo”, way-over-priced real estate…). But regardless of what I think, I’ve always loved the historic districts of the city. One of which, we visit at least once a year; Boylan Heights. It’s a section of the city that is a haven for artists who prefer to live in a community rather than a high-rise downtown.
The houses there are really old, some are dilapidated, some have been meticulously restored, but no doubt all of them are beautiful in so many different ways! What’s also beautiful is that their inhabitants host an art walk annually and for the last 3 to 5 years, Mel and I have made our way down there to take a look (and every once and a while buy, if we have an unexpected windfall)! The turn out is always huge and the reception from the artists is always warm!
If you’re ever in town and have the time, it’s a wonderful way to spend a few hours on a crisp wintery sunday!
Speaking of art (At this moment, I use the term loosely), yesterday Mel and I made a trip to Habitat For Humanity’s “ReStore” and purchased a few doors.
“A few WHAT you say?”
Doors. Detached ones. Without hinges.
Why the hell would we do that? Well, we’ve been wanting to add more table space to work on our projects together upstairs in the media room and while our old desk was good for the many places we’ve lived before, it’s kinda worn out it’s welcome.
To remedy this situation, I thought about creating that extra space not with a new table, but with reclaimed materials. I had a couple of ideas on where to find materials but a couple of friends specifically recommended the ReStore, so on Saturday morning we hopped in the car and jetted on up north of Raleigh to see what we could scavenge. It took a bit, but we wound up snagging two doors. One was solid (HEEEAAAvy…) and the other hollow, we got them home, set them up and I attached some table legs I got from home depot (oddly, the ReStore had none of these)!
So check it out! Excuse the mess, I just wanted to get all of our stuff was on it to verify the structure we built was sturdy enough.
The project ended up being really cheap and once we have it all painted, I think it’ll look awesome!
So yeah! Some folks go on vacations to celebrate anniversaries! Us? We head to the H.F.H. ReStore!
It’s just how we roll!
Speaking of art (this time I mean it in it’s finest form), you know how I just slipped in that it was an anniversary yesterday? Well it was! Yesterday was the day Melinda and I started dating, 17 years ago! It seems like yesterday! Well, almost. When a co-worker mentioned that if we originally got together because we got pregnant, that our child would soon be “legally out of our hair”, it kind of put it all into a different frame. 17 years IS a long time and honestly? Who better to spend that length time with then your best friend!
Hope you all had a great weekend. Ours totally rocked!
Cheers,
Tad (and Mel)
